Full Version: INTRODUCE YOURSELVES

Let's get the rule out of the way, and get to talking, eh?

  1. GET INVOLVED

If it contributes to the life of the community, it's allowed. If it adds nothing or detracts, it's not. That's it. There's two principles derived from that:

    1. Keep it connected.
Threads should start connected to Upstate New York and/or ska, but anything that gets people talking and thinking is fair game.

    2. No abuse, spamming or trolling.
Conflict is fine if it arises from a discussion. Listing your show or new album/website/whatever is fine if if it sparks discussion.

This is a place for dialogue. There are other places to pick a fight or hawk your wares.

Very simple.

I strongly suggest you use at least your real first name, either in your logon or your "nickname"

So, introductions. Geographic location (as vague or specific as you like,) a couple fave bands, how you got hooked on ska, maybe a favorite story and a picture of yourself, if you like.

Hey, my name's Steven. Some folks call me Twitch.

How I Discovered Ska, The Short Version:
wandered into Milestones two years ago and the Slackers blew my mind. Soon after, there was a ska drought in Rochester, so I started going to shows Buffalo and Syracuse. Met Ska Danny, and decided to organize shows closer to home.

I dig bands throughout the spectrum of ska - The Slackers, The Know How, The Skatalites, Public Access, and The Hoboz, to name a few.

I can't say thank you enough to all the bands that have worked with me so far, people who've assisted me with business and promotion matters, and everyone who comes to my shows. I've only just started, and it's been a blast already.

Lets hope I'm doing this right! Hi my name is Frankie Wenzel I live in Fairport. My top 5 favorite bands are The Doors, Dropkick Murphys, The Flour City Knuckleheads, The Ducky boys and Operation ivy. Although only one of those is a ska band I still like other ska bands such as Catch 22, The Aquabats, and thanks to twitch The Flamingos. How i got hooked on ska was back when i was in 8th grade my friend dan wanted to start a ska band and he wanted me to play alto sax cause he knew I played in the school band. So i joined and we got together with a few other children named: tim, drew wayne (later joined the glow), chris, and andrew frisicano (of the glow). Our name was crossXreaction, and we were badass mofos. I didnt really do much i guess i just tried not to look stupid and also hit a few notes now and then. We played with the glow, amy ryan and the operatives, the ska hooligans which is now pretty much the levar burtones i think (they had a lot of people), and a few others i cant remember. So i guess i owe my intrest in ska to Dan Munier. THANKS DAN! I dont really have words of wisdom feed your pets i guess? later

No worries, you covered all the bases.

Thanks for dropping in. I know nobody wants to be THE first one in. People forget that the community over on the Syracuse Ska board is the culmination of eight years of hard work on Danny's part.

There won't be that kind of hustle and bustle here without a little sweat.

How do all!
my names Andy but I'm known as "Gaffer" thanks to my time as a roadie. I live in the sunny (very rarely) North West of England in the city of Preston where I spend my time promoting gigs and DJ-ing a Punk and Ska night in my local as well as trying to get my band started...
that and getting drunk.
I grew up listening to a lot of Ska music in its many forms from the 2 tone era of Madness, the Specials, the Selector, The Beat, and Bad manners etc, to the earlier 1960's stuff like Judge Dread, Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, Laurel Aitkin, Millie, and Derrick Morgan. thats all thanks a lot to my dad who just loved listening to loads of different styles of music from the rock of his old teddy boy days to the sounds of the sixties and the charts at he time. He always had a radio on in any room he was near. I got a lot more into Ska and Reggae when i found a box of old albums and singles lying and left to rott in the next house we moved into when I was about 14 ( a lot of Judge Dread!) this was about the same time I discovered Punk rock as well, started listening to bands like Discharge, Exploited an GBH etc.
been getting a lot more into the so called "third wave" sound as times moved on and thats all cool.
hope thats enough, and not too boring!
Gaffer ;-)

I also listen to a lot of 80's tunes.

Glad you had a good time on Monday, Phil.

I've been promoting shows for six months now, and that was our first move into the big leagues. It'll be a little while 'til we do another on that scale; for now, I'm having a ball with the regional bands.

Thanks for reminding me. I need to make tutorials so people can get the most out of the spiffy forum software I chose.

And a thread for pictures.

my co-worker tells me you were grumpy at not finding me today.

Yeah, all it takes is one minor setback, and I'm huddled in the corner, writing emo lyrics. Something about "the greatest romance that never was..."

Fortunately there was that handy concrete countertop to bash my head against until the feeling passed. The guy who designed that coffee shop is a genius!

Hey Everyone, My name is Tom Scahill and I'm in a Punk/Ska without horns band called Biting Midge. We are from Williamson (A half hour east of Rochester on 104). Twitch has been kind enough to get us exposed to ska fans in Rocherster. Hopefully we will be playing more in the coming months. You can find out more about us at www.myspace.com/bitingmidge or www.purevolume.com/bitingmidge. The latter is more developed at this point, but we have a couple shitty live recordings on both of them. Thats all I guess. Later.

Oh yeah...5 of my favorite bands are The Mr. T Experience, The Vandals, The Suicide machines, Streetlight Manifesto, and Rancid. I got into Ska through Reel Big Fish to be honest. However, I got bored with it and started listening to more punk and also some lame emo stuff. Then, Streetlight's Everything Goes Numb came out and the fire inside me that burned for ska was nursed from embers to a blaze. I discovered bands like Big D, Mu-330 and (rediscovered) Less Than Jake, and later realized that there were ska bands in Rochester. That was only slightly after my friends Ben, John "Bonke" Bonke, my brother, and I decided to start a band, heavily influenced by the likes of Rancid and The Suicide Machines. Ok, now I'm done.

Hey everyone
My names Andrew Kunkel, but most just drop the first name. I live near Rochester. I've been into ska for almost 3 years now. The first song I ever heard was "Skatanic" by Reel Big Fish. Ever since I've been hooked. My 5 favorite bands are Streetlight Manifesto, The Arrogant Sons Of Bitches, The Aquabats, Suburban Legends and the Mad Caddies. I love basically any band with a ska beat, and I recently went to my first show at milestones (The CD release party for Mrs.Skannotto) That was one amazing show. I also listen to a lot of the 2-tone music like the specials, the english beat and madness. I play trumpet some, and I've been in sort of a jam group that never really formed a band. Well, I'm looking forward to all of the upcoming shows around here. I'd like to thank all the local bands, twitch and everyone else involved who are bringing the ska beat to Rochester!
